I will have to pay homage to Dave, who has been on the committee as Treasurer for the last three years. As a club, we are all grateful for his volunteering to take care of all our finances in the club. Not only that but he has always tried to make everyone who joins feel welcomed and happy. When I first joined the club, Dave was one of the first people to welcome me when I arrived at Newnham Court. It’s never easy when you first join a club, but on meeting Dave he certainly made me feel welcomed. And hasn’t he done a mighty fine job over the years, welcoming newcomers and making everyone smile.

Let’s learn his journey into the club and his love of VW.

In May 2012 Dave purchased Bluebell the Bay (4 berth Bay, 1972, 1600cc twinport) and had never joined a club before, but decided that it was about time to join one. Now a proud owner of a Volkswagen classic campervan it was about time to mingle with other enthusiasts. Kentish V-Dub Klub were then held at the Orchard Pub, Spot Lane, Bearsted and still on a Thursday night. Back in the day Dave said most of the carpark was taken up by the club and they spent the evening mainly around their vehicles in the carpark chatting. On the committee at the time Dave remembers Lisa G, Sarah R and the President at the time Lee W. This was his beginning of the love of the club.

When did Dave become Treasurer? He was elected at the KVWK Christmas Meal at Newham Court, Maidstone Christmas 2015. Ever since each year he has been happy to be re elected and stand. I think Dave now deserves his well-earned retirement this year and I’m sure he’s stepped down so he can have more time with Wayne his new beloved T5.

So, what are Dave’s most memorable moments at the club? So, I asked him “The club has been brilliant for me, and I wanted it to be something I did with my whole family. Some of my best times have been just chilling in the sun at shows with my family. I’ve also had some great nights sitting around a campfire having some drinks late into the morning, just chatting. The early jager days will always stay with me!”

We have all been to many events over the years. We all have a favourite event we love to attend. Whitenoise is the favourite of Dave as it was his first ever large show and said it was off the scale!! In August the weather is normally full of great sunshine apart from this year. Dave said he’s had some fantastic nights at Whitenoise which will always be special to him.

Back on the subject of our rides. What was Dave’s first ever car??? It so happens to have been a white Mk 2 Ford Escort 1300L. He’s not alone as also Spicey and Davey also had white Mk2 Ford Escort as their first cars. Dave says “Big respect to Spicey and Davey!!!” Bluebell the Bay wasn’t his first Volkswagen. His first VW was a bright red automatic Passat Tdi in 1999, Dave’s comment was “Loved that car”.

Everyone who has owned different vehicles over the years always has that favourite or two. I am presently trying to picture Dave at 18 in the early 90s who voted his favourite car his Mk 1 Ford Escort with custom paint job in electric hawaiian blue, cruising along. Maybe playing MC Hammer “U Can’t Touch This” He said it looked incredible!!!! His favourite campervan is Bluebell, and is part of the family. But now a T5 owner he said “Wayne is close behind though!” I give the thumbs up to that remark 😀

As club members we all have driven different vehicles and owned different VWs. I asked Dave, which I am quoting him, as this his personal memory. How many VWs have you owned and when did you get your first vehicle?

“When I met Corinne in 1996, she was driving a Polo 2 door Fox in white. I loved being a passenger in that car, and it was called “Penny”. I then owned two VW Passats, which I really rated, especially the 1.9TDi…what an engine!! In 2000, we bought a white T25 Leisuredrive from Ramsgate which was rusty, and I spent forever rubbing it down and getting the bodywork like new. As soon as we’d get in it to go away, it felt like a real escape from normal life. The same feeling, we get today. In 2012, we bought Bluebell the bay. I knew I wanted a campervan to be a part of my two boys childhood, and it continues to be exactly that. Being someone who’s always loved campervans, but not wanting to sell Bluebell, it was a no brainer to buy a second campervan. This has fulfilled a childhood dream of mine…two campervans. In June this year, we bought Wayne the T5. He is a totally different kind of van to Bluebell, but lovely to drive. The roof space is massive and means we can all sleep-in comfort. He is a good van.”

Most of the club have campervans and love to travel. I asked Dave his plans this year. For 2019 he will be taking to the road with Bluebell and Wayne both local and further afield on trips. Far future his plans are to drive up to Scandinavia and down to Spain.

The big question personally I had to ask was out of 10 how much does he love Wayne? Dave gave Wayne a 10. His plan was to use him as his daily, but he did’t want to put too many miles on him, so presently he is great to jump in and go for unplanned nights away.

I’m sure everyone would like to thank Dave for the three years he has given to the club as the Treasurer and committee member. At the next event buy him a pint in gratitude.
